New Year, new games?

Happy New Year to all!

My gaming resolution is to actually get playing stuff... so while I build my Arthurian Pathfinder world, I need something to jump straight into:

My current favourite is Alternity (sci-fi) RPG - and the Gamma World setting to go with it that comes with a nice adventure ready to run and full of hooks! Why don't more setting books come with these things? I've always liked roll-under systems, and I love Alternity's levels of success and situational dice modifiers... and the loose "classes" it offers have a wide range of options while still allowing players to specialise.

Hopefully running this next week, but we'll see if everyone turns up!

Also, I've got pretty interested in the CORTEX system for more complex rules-light gaming... I like the way it makes players roll an attribute and a skill together, based on the the context of their actions; for example, taking an aimed shot may require DEXTERITY and GUNS, whereas returning fire on a sniper may need AWARENESS and GUNS, or working out how many rounds a holed-up enemy has left before reloading might ask for INTELLIGENCE and GUNS... It's a pretty neat way of adding complexity and depth to a system that looks pretty easy to roll characters and dive into. It's the basis for the Serentity/Firefly and Battlestar Galactica RPGs too, so there's plenty of source material floating about for the fanboys/girls.

  1. Never knew about the ALTERNITY rpg; the "roll under your own skill" rules make me think Twilight2000 mixed with d20.
